Q: What kind of certification is available in TN?

A: Currently, the state of TN only offers a certification in court interpretation. There is no certification for healthcare and community interpreters offered in the state of TN at this time. However, TFLI does offer several opportunities for professional development throughout the year for interpreters of any language. For information on these opportunties, click here.

Q: What languages are available for certification testing?

A: For a list of languages available for certification testing, please click here. This list is maintained by the National Consortium of State Courts, the creators of the tests used for certification in TN.

Q: Does TFLI coordinate the certification program in TN?

A: No. The certification program in TN is coordinated by the Administrative Office of the Courts. TFLI only provides the TN State Court Interpreter Ethics and Skill Building workshop. Your attendance at the workshop is the first step of certification.

Q: What is the certification process in TN?

This website contains all the information you need about the program. You can download the Interpreter's Manual, which details the tests, costs of certification and other related questions. Q: Will I be certified after I attend the TN State Court Ethics and Skill Building Workshop?

A: No. There are several steps in the certification process. The process can take anywhere from a few months to a year to complete.

Q: Are there any prerequisites to the workshop?

A: Formally, there are no prerequisites. The workshop is most beneficial for those individuals with the following characteristics: fluency in another language and English, interest in a very new and exciting career, interest in legal and court scenarios, and an open mind ready to learn about new concepts in interpretation.
